It is with profound sadness that we document the passing of Tom Butler, PhD, CSP a respected safety professional, mentor, and one of the founding members of the ASSP Long Beach Chapter.

Born in Los Angeles, he spent his adult life in Southern California, moving to San Pedro in 1984. As a life-long learner, he received his PhD degree from USC, long after he retired from 43 years of government service with CalTrans, CalOSHA, and the LA Metropolitan Water District. As a dedicated Safety Professional, he maintained his CSP (Certified Safety Professional) and found a second calling, teaching Safety and Accident Investigation for Cal State LA and Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Tom's dedication to the safety profession spanned decades. His leadership and commitment helped shape the Long Beach ASSP Chapter into the strong and vibrant professional community it is today. He served as Chapter President in 1994, 2009, and 2012, providing guidance, counsel, and unwavering support to fellow safety professionals throughout his career.

Tom's contributions to the safety profession extended far beyond his official roles. He was known for his professionalism, commitment to excellence, and genuine care for people. His influence touched countless people and safety professionals, many of whom benefitted from his wise counsel, encouragement, and leadership.

In recognition of his extraordinary legacy, the Long Beach ASSP Chapter established the Thomas Butler Award for Safety Excellence, one of the chapter's highest honors. This award recognizes individuals who demonstrate superior service, exceptional leadership, extraordinary dedication to the safety profession, and a commitment to the highest ideals of ASSP. Tom's values and example continue to inspire every recipient of that award.

His impact on the Long Beach ASSP chapter was further recognized in 2024 when he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Long Beach Chapter, honoring a lifetime of service to the profession. Beyond being a mover and shaker, Tom was a personal friend to the profession, he is irreplaceable.

Tom's service and celebration of life was held on Friday, August 14, at 2:00 PM at Green Hills Memorial Park in San Pedro, California. Memorial donations can be made in his name to the Hazel St. Claire Butler Scholarship at Cal State Long Beach, or the City of Hope.
